President Donald Trump appears to be aiming to settle the latest trade spat with China in what he is calling a “fantastic meeting” with President Xi Jinping.
The “big meeting” is set for Thursday at the APEC summit in South Korea. Speaking from Japan, Trump said, “I think it’s going to work out very well, actually.”
The spat is serious, involving Chinese rare earth controls and a retaliatory US threat of 100% tariffs, effective November 1.
The conflict has also seen new US port fees and a wave of mutual countermeasures from Beijing.
Trump, however, is focused on a deal, predicting the outcome will be “great for everybody.”
“I am going to a wonderful place,” Trump said, referring to South Korea. “We are gonna be (having) a fantastic meeting,” he emphasized during his briefing in Tokyo.
