President Donald Trump has described the current ceasefire with Iran as being in a critical condition, likening it to being on “life support.” He hinted at the possibility of resuming U.S. Navy military escorts for ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz, in an effort to counteract Iran’s blockade of this crucial maritime passage.
Trump dismissed Iran’s recent peace proposals as “stupid,” firmly stating that he was not feeling any internal pressure to broker a deal. Reflecting on the ceasefire that has been effective since April 7, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction by saying, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He further illustrated the ceasefire’s precarious state by comparing it to a medical emergency with a mere “1% chance of living.”
In an attempt to de-escalate tensions, the U.S. had sent Iran a list of conditions aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Trump’s dismissal of Iran’s subsequent counter-proposals has stalled progress. Last week, Trump halted Project Freedom, an initiative to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, after just two days. This decision was made ostensibly to allow Iran time to consider his peace terms, though the plan had also faced opposition from Saudi Arabia, which refused to support any action it deemed escalatory.
The situation further intensified as oil prices surged following Iran’s declaration that no further discussions would occur regarding the blockade unless their terms were acknowledged. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, underscored Iran’s stance, stating, “As long as the war on all fronts is not over, sanctions are not lifted, blocked funds are not released, war damages are not compensated and Iran’s sovereignty over the strait of Hormuz not recognised, there will be no other negotiations.”
