In a move that could change how iPhone users manage their data, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature allowing chat, photo, video, and document backups to be stored on WhatsApp’s own cloud service rather than Apple’s iCloud. This development could offer users a fresh alternative for managing their digital content storage.
As per the reports, the new feature is designed to provide 2GB of complimentary cloud storage specifically for chat backups. For those requiring additional space, there might be an opportunity to purchase more storage through various paid plans. An initial entry-level option is expected to include 50GB of storage, with even larger capacity plans reportedly in the works.
Despite these advancements, the new cloud storage feature will remain optional. iPhone users will continue to have iCloud as their default backup method, but those opting for WhatsApp’s storage can switch back to iCloud whenever they wish. Notably, the backup data under WhatsApp’s cloud service is anticipated to have end-to-end encryption by default, enhancing the security of users’ information.
The feature is currently undergoing testing via Apple’s TestFlight platform, although a specific timeline for its public rollout has not yet been confirmed. Additionally, there are indications that WhatsApp is also planning to introduce a similar cloud backup solution for users on Android devices, widening the scope of this innovative storage option.
