The U.S. government has initiated a temporary suspension of immigrant visa appointments globally, as part of a comprehensive training program for consular officers, the State Department disclosed. This program aims to enhance the efficiency and consistency in the screening and vetting procedures for visa applicants.
The training, which commenced at U.S. embassies and consulates in early August, focuses on evaluating whether visa applicants might become a “public charge” by depending on public benefits. Consequently, visa appointment schedules have been modified, with embassies and consulates expected to directly inform affected applicants about these changes.
This initiative is a component of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to tighten immigration screening and enforcement processes. In addition to these training measures, the administration has introduced various actions impacting visa holders and is contemplating further fees and restrictions on certain immigration and work-related programs.
The suspension has led to uncertainty for many applicants, disrupting travel, employment, and relocation plans that hinged on pre-scheduled visa interviews. Despite the adjustments, the State Department has not yet specified when the normal processing of appointments will be fully reinstated.
