Heart disease, often a silent threat that develops over many years, can be exacerbated by certain lifestyle habits that don’t always present obvious warning signs. While maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine are well-known strategies for reducing cardiovascular risk, experts point out that several other factors play crucial roles in heart health.

A cardiologist has identified 15 habits that warrant attention to safeguard the heart and minimize the risk of long-term health issues. Among these, the use of nicotine products such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and nicotine pouches is highlighted for their potential to damage blood vessels and elevate blood pressure, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease. Additionally, the danger of ignoring high blood pressure is emphasized, as it forces the heart to exert more effort, heightening the chances of heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.

Sleep apnea, a condition that can lower oxygen levels repeatedly during sleep, also poses a significant threat to cardiovascular health by adding extra strain to the heart. Consistently high blood sugar levels and insulin resistance can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, even before diabetes sets in. Moreover, the consumption of ultra-processed foods, rich in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, can adversely affect cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

A sedentary lifestyle, characterized by prolonged periods of sitting, has been linked to poorer heart health, underscoring the importance of regular movement. Additionally, getting less than seven hours of sleep may lead to increased inflammation, stress hormones, and blood pressure, all detrimental to heart health. Chronic stress, which keeps cortisol levels elevated, can also impose continuous pressure on the cardiovascular system, while high levels of LDL and ApoB particles contribute to plaque buildup in arteries.

Neglecting strength training, not consuming enough fiber, and carrying excess belly fat are other habits that can negatively impact heart health. Excessive alcohol consumption can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms, whereas habitual mouth breathing during sleep could indicate underlying disorders requiring medical attention. Finally, the importance of rest and recovery days is stressed, as they allow the body and heart to recuperate from physical and mental strain. Experts encourage individuals to maintain healthy habits, undergo regular check-ups, and seek medical advice when needed to preserve long-term heart health.
