Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of DeepMind, is stepping down from his role as CEO of the Google-owned AI research unit amid a significant leadership overhaul. Founded in 2010, DeepMind has been a central player in AI innovation. Hassabis will transition into the role of chair of DeepMind and assume a new position as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This shift will enable him to dedicate more time to pursuing long-term AI research, specifically focusing on the development of artificial general intelligence. In addition, he will maintain his leadership role at Isomorphic Labs, a spin-off company from DeepMind that specializes in drug discovery.
Taking over the reins at DeepMind is Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer, who will become the head of the organization with the title of senior vice-president. The restructuring at DeepMind coincides with the exit of several senior engineers from Google’s AI division.
